I have sporadically told bits and pieces of my history to friends and family members. Typically their reaction is something along the lines of, “What?! I can’t even imagine you doing that.” Or “I would have never guessed that happened to you.”
I know I have the story below posted on the homepage of my website but I wanted to post it again here. Because 1) It’s true, and 2) because I was reminded of this yesterday. Trauma will always be a part of my story but it’s no longer a part of my identity. And that, my friends, is a good feeling.
You’ve probably heard the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from the book of Daniel -a tale of three men who stood up to King Nebuchadnezzar to declare God as their one and only Lord. After refusing to bow down to him, the king has the three men thrown into a furnace where an angel of the Lord miraculously intervenes to protect them. One detail of this story that always amazes me is when the men came out of the furnace, there was no sign of harm upon them… they didn’t even smell of smoke!
Past abuse can leave us feeling like we’re walking around with an unpleasant “smell of smoke.” Whether the experience was because of something that was wrongfully done to us or something we did ourselves, the aftermath has us walking around as if we came out of the furnace nearly burned to death. But I believe YOU can walk in freedom! You don’t have to walk around smelling like smoke!
