“Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing”
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy model created to help those experiencing a number of concerns including trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and many other emotional disturbances. The human brain has automatic mental responses similar to physical reactions. For example, if a person touches a hot stove then he or she automatically pulls the hand back to prevent injury. In the same way, regardless of a person’s intention, the mind will react automatically.
Traumatic or disturbing experiences are generally accompanied by negative emotions, beliefs or physical sensations. This experience has the potential to overwhelm the brain with information, leaving the experience unprocessed. Therefore, the situation is stored in the brain exactly how the person experienced it. For example, suppose a heated argument occurred between coworkers, if the memory remains unprocessed, the person may experience the same level of anger and fear each time they see that particular coworker, or when he or she is in a similar situation.
This model of therapy is designed to “relearn” the negatively stored beliefs, memories or emotions, allowing your brain to discern what information is useful and discard what is no longer needed. This therapy is accomplished through bi-lateral stimulation. In this process the left and right side of the brain are rapidly stimulated for a brief period of time through visual, auditory or tactical means. Afterwards, the client is left feeling relieved and able to move forward in a more adaptable way!
