I’m not typically big on New Year's resolutions for a couple of reasons. 1. Because our resolutions are typically unrealistic and 2. Because we usually forget about them by February. It is, however, hard to deny that there is something inspiring at the idea of a fresh start. I suppose that’s partially because there’s no shame attached to a fresh start. But why does it so quickly fade?
Personally, the only time I’ve fulfilled a “New Years resolution” is if it’s something specific God has laid on my heart. For example, over the last couple of years I have started praying for God to reveal His resolution for my year. Each time that specific “issue” came up I was equipped to handle it much more effectively. I personally believe, even with the best intentions, our resolutions fail because they are self-focused instead of God-focused.
There were several verses that stuck out to me as I asked God to reveal the theme of this year. One particular one is,
Psalm 91:12 “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
How different would our life look if we were inspired to live for eternity in our New Years resolutions rather than temporary or superficial things?
So ask yourself, what am I striving for this year? To try and fit the mold of our culture by eating healthy, exercising, etc. or to pursue the heart of God through obedience?
